8 MIAC "Handshake" Vote
The MIAC voted during its meeting of November
8th to RECOMMEND in "TEAM" sports that game
officials remain at the competition venue until the post game sportsmanship
handshake has been concluded. This recommendation will be in place for both the
upcoming Winter and 2008 Spring sport seasons.
Beginning with the Fall season of 2008, officials will be required to remain at
the competition site until the handshake ceremony has concluded.
The Council vote also acknowledged that there may be, on occasion, unusual
circumstances when either the contest officials and/or the site manager see a
need to excuse the officials from remaining at the competition site after the
conclusion of the game.
This vote affects team sports, and not those sports that do not lend themselves
to a culminating opportunity for this ceremony.

the MIAA Web Site:
New Chemical Health Rule
During its August 7 meeting, the Board of
Directors discussed issues generated by the new "school
year-long" application of the Chemical Health rule. The
Board addressed the following three questions:
1.
Question:
May a Spring athlete who violates the new rule during the Fall season
participate in a Winter sport in order to serve the penalty before his/her
Spring season?
Answer:
Yes, provided the student athlete remains a team member through the completion of the Winter
season.
2.
Question: When
must a school begin to monitor individuals who are in violation of this rule?
Answer: When a
student participates in his/her initial team activity, then that
student is bound by the rule for the remainder of his/her high school
years.
Comment:
Remember all MIAA eligibility rules are minimum standards that may be
enhanced by individual member schools. A number of our schools have
had the year-long standard in place, and some even extend their own local
standard to include the summer months. You need to be aware that
this Board interpretation will cause two students in violation of the rule to
be treated differently in some cases…. If you prefer the rule at
your school to impact students who have never been involved with your athletic
program, local enhancement of this interpretation would address
that….
Additionally the Board ruled that: If a student is not an athletic
participant for one full year after affirmation of a violation, then
the penalty period would close and the student would face no
consequence. (This eliminates the need for principals to
track students in alternative school settings who may return to the high
school a year or more after a confirmed violation.)
3.
Question: How
does the rule apply to a transfer student?
Answer:
Form 200 will be revised to include a
related question. If Form 200 reveals that the student has a full or
partial penalty that would have been served at the sending school, then that
penalty would move with the student to the receiving school.
